Liberatory Access Design
A design philosophy for building access before people have to disclose, explain, or justify a need.
← Back to the homepageLiberatory Access Design starts from a simple premise: human variation is normal. Access should be built into the conditions of participation instead of granted only after a person proves that the original design failed them.
Core commitments
Design for variation from the beginning.
The framework centers four commitments: access as a precondition, proximity instead of segregation, flexibility without punishment, and co-creation with the people most affected by the design.
The point is not to eliminate individualized accommodation. It is to reduce how often people must carry the burden of identifying the barrier, disclosing private information, negotiating an exception, and absorbing the cost of a system that was never built with them in mind.
